CHILDREN OF THE SUN
Helping our students get along in a multicultural society
Our planet Earth is made of the elements of the sun, and we are created from the elements of the Earth. Genetically and chemically, there is very little difference from one human being to another. We are all created equal, but differ greatly in appearance, cultural heritage and personal beliefs.
"Children of the Sun" is a celebration of our differences and the richness this diversity gives to our society. We are a nation of immigrants offering freedom of opportunity to all our citizens. Americas proudly proclaim the ideals of liberty and equality set down by our Founding Fathers, but in our daily lives we witness the ugliness of racism, sexism and religious bigotry.
Hatred is born of ignorance and that is why it is vital to teach children that it's okay to be different. "Children of the Sun" will offer the lessons of tolerance in ways that will make students feel good about themselves, treat others more fairly and inspire teachers to create communities of understanding in their classrooms.
A BRIEF OUTLINE OF THE PROGRAM
- We begin with Ozzie's world map, 8 feet tall and 14 feet wide. We learn where Americans came from, Native Americans, early explorers, slaves and immigrants past and present.
- We examine early humans, where they lived and how climate produced people of varied appearances.
- We explore the questions, what makes up the culture of a given society and how do various ways of life develop in a particular region? Ozzie demonstrates the multicultural richness of our Native Americans by showing Indian artifacts.
- We learn how the varied cultures brought to America by our immigrant ancestors have helped make our country not only interesting, but strong as well.
- We meet American heroes who have made contributions to the Civil Rights Movement, Rosa Parks, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
- Stories and slides featuring profiles of children and parents who have come to America from different parts of the world develop a message of brotherhood. The slide show concludes with a beautiful song written by Ozzie and Mike Moschella.
