The Great Dinosaurs

No subject captures the imaginations of young children quite like Dinosaurs. Through the help of resource people from across our country, the assistance of museums and laboratories and the clever use of theatre in education, we have put together what the late Frank Ritzer of Maplewood called "The most creative, imaginative and professionally executed teaching session I have ever observed in an elementary school."

Dinosaur Time-Line

A class of volunteers stretches a clothes line around the room to serve as a 200-million year time-line. Black light sets the dinosaur cut-outs glowing as we learn about vast stretches of time.

Real Dinosaur Bones

We learn about fossils and how they are formed. When time permists we will bring a box of dinosaur bones into the classroom for closer inspection. Recently we purchased three exceptional casts from Pricneton University, part of a meat-eater's jaw, dinosaur eggs, and the first complete baby dinosaurs ever found. This copy is one of fifteen baby dinosaurs found by Jack Horner in Montana in 1978.

Digging For Dinosaurs

We conclude the show with a giant screen slide presentation into the rugged back country of South Dakota, Montana and Utah. Sutdents will learn how fossils are removed from the ground and meet the paleontologists who have helped us gain firsthand knowledge of field work. We have worked with Dr. Jim Martin and Dr. David Parris in the marine sediments of south western South Dakota where giant sea reptiles died. We visit Jack Horner in Montana where whole families of duckbill dinosaurs have been uncovered. Finally, we recreate a week spent with Dr. James Jensen and his Brigham Young University students on an exciting dig near Moab, Utah.
