THE STORY OF HAWAII

Every student will one day do a report on a state as a part of hisor her school -work. This is Ozzie's report on his chosen state, Hawaii. This program is a teacher's lesson showing how one approaches a particularsubject for a class report. Ozzie has chosen this format after sharingwith teachers the difficult and often frustrating task of teaching elementarystudents how to outline and organize the contents of a report. Does thissound too academic? No way! If you are familiar with Ozzie's approach toteaching, you can rest assured that he will use all his energy and imaginationto make this report an exciting journey through ancient and modern Hawaii, the land and the people
.

THE EVOLUTION OF VOLCANIC ISLANDS

When Ozzie first visited Hawaii in December of 1984, he was fascinatedby the different topography of the five islands he visited-Oahu, Kauai,Molokai, Maui and the Big Island. He will show how these islands were formedand how they will erode away as new islands rise from the ocean floor.

LIFE COMES TO AN ISLAND PARADISE

There are many exciting theories on how plant and animal life came to liveon lava flows that were lifeless when they were first formed 70 millionyears ago.

THE POLYNESIAN PEOPLE ARRIVE

These Pacific wanderers brought to these islands techniques for living, playing, fighting, praying and beautifying their surroundings with no knowledgeof concurrent civilizations to their east and west. Island people are trulyunique, and Ozzie stresses the importance of understanding and preservingthe rich heritage of ancient Hawaii.

HAWAII TODAY

Nearly five million tourists visit Hawaii each year, most of them frommainland America. The ecology of these islands is extremely fragile. Whenwe visit this, our most unique state, we must respect the land, the water, the plant and animal life. We must also respect the beautiful way of lifepreserved in the heritage of island people. As our Native North Americanshave a culture rooted in a love for Mother Earth and the honest interplayof her inhabitants, so do the Hawaiian people.

OZZIE'S TRIPS TO HAWAII

The show will close with a spectacular slide show. Ozzie will recreatehis backpacking trip into Haleakala Crater on Maui, his horseback ridethrough beautiful, isolated Waipio Valley on the Big Island and his helicopterride through Waimea Canyon, Waialeale Crater and along the 2000 foot cliffsof Napali Coast on the island of Kauai.

SUMMARY

Many children who see Ozzie's report will one day visit Hawaii. They, likemost of the tourists who come to Hawaii, may only see the beaches, hotelsand shops of Honolulu and Waikiki Beach. But maybe not. Our hope is thatthey will come with a deeper understanding of island people and the naturalhistory of these changing volcanic islands.
